Healthy Humor Humor may help heal. A new report says that laughter helped reduce allergic symptoms.
In a letter published in the Journal of the American Medical Association,
Japanese researchers described how allergic skin welts shrank in patients who watched a Charlie
Chaplin movie. The researchers 26 men and women with allergies to dust mites.
The patients were injected with allergens and the welts they developed were measured.
They were then split into two groups.
One group watched video on weather, while the other group watched Chaplin's "Modern
Times." After 87 minutes, researchers measured the welts again.
They found that the welts shrank in the patients who'd seen the funny video, but not in those
who'd seen the weather video. The researchers could not say how the humor reduced
the allergic reactions. But The Associated Press quotes another expert as saying that since
stress the immune system, easing stress through laughter may help immune function.
